Charlottesville Restaurant Scene: The Corner

Welcome to the first blog of food week! This week, we will be talking about different parts
of food in Charlottesville, and in UVa. Today, we’re covering restaurants on the Corner,
the strip of places on University Ave. right behind the Rotunda. With convenient walking
and Trolley access, the Corner is one of the most popular places for students to hang out.
There are plenty of options for food along the Corner, so let’s explore some!

UVa Classics
The Corner has a lot of great restaurants, but there are some that all of us at UVa have
really taken to and made a part of the tradition. Bodos is an amazing bagel place right
behind the Rotunda. You can get bagels with cream cheese, sandwich bagels, salads, soups,
and more all for prices that are perfect for college students. Hundreds of people go to Bodos
a day, and one of the “100 Things to Do” before you graduate UVa is to grab the number
one ticket there, or go for "Bodomination," getting the number one ticket at all three Bodos
locations.

Got Dumplings is a fantastic place right on the Corner. The Corner location of Got
Dumplings is great, but the food truck is even better. The food truck is parked by
the Amphitheater during the year, and you can use Plus Dollars there, so going to Got
Dumplings can be a part of your meal plan at UVa.

Boylan is a classic location on the Corner, mostly known as a place for students to
gather during UVa’s away basketball games to watch on the many screens. Boylan was
the main site of UVa’s celebration for the basketball championship, as students
gathered outside on the street throughout the night. After the win in the Final Four, a
bride came to the Corner to crowdsurf outside of Boylan (WAHOOWA). It’s a great
place to eat and watch UVa with friends.

Health Nut
There are plenty of healthy options on the Corner, which is great to have especially
being so close to Grounds. One of the most popular is Corner Juice, which has fresh
made juice and smoothies. Their food is so fresh and incredible, and their food has
UVa themed names, like “The Lawn” juice and “The Hoo” smoothie. This is perfect
during the hot summer, because their juice is fresh and healthy, but also tastes like
the most amazing popsicle you have ever had.

Roots Natural Kitchen is huge among students at UVa. Started by Hoos, the
restaurant has become incredibly popular. You can build your own salad and rice bowls,
or choose from their expertly assembled combinations on the menu. Roots even has a
mobile app, where you can order online and pick up inside, making it very convenient.
Their food is amazing, with the added bonus that you can tell your mom that you are
choosing to eat salad at college.

New in Town
The landscape of the Corner is always changing, with new locations coming in and out
frequently. There are always great classics, but sometimes it can be fun to try something
new. Asado opened up just recently, and is already big on Grounds. “The Wing and Taco
Place” has specials every night, and they host events for clubs on Grounds, so you can
have the top floor all to you and your friends. They also have four words on their menu
that sing to the ears of all people: FRIED ICE CREAM SANDWICH.

Thyme & Co. just opened, and already has a buzz around Grounds. Some of the interns
went for lunch (for investigative journalism purposes, of course) and all gave rave reviews.
The place is healthy and delicious, and is an exciting new location on the Corner.

Virginia Traditions
UVa is full of traditions, but the Charlottesville area of Virginia has plenty of traditions
of it’s own as well, and some of those traditions are alive on the Corner. Crozet Pizza,
a pizza place in a fantastically cozy house on the Corner, is actually the second location
of one of Virginia’s famous restaurants. The original Crozet Pizza (located about 20
minutes from Grounds) was named on Food Network’s 50 Best Pies in the Country in
2011 in Food Network Magazine. It was also named the best pizza in the area by
PBS in 2015. The location right on the Corner is amazing, and it’s really cool to have
a piece of a Virginia establishment right by our school. If you’re interested in reading

The Virginian, founded in 1927, is the oldest restaurant in Charlottesville. Still open and
serving food on the Corner today, the Virginian is a Charlottesville tradition. The food is great,
and is a favorite of students on Grounds. You can also get a root beer float in a collectible
glass that you can take home, and as a lover of cups and mugs, this speaks to my soul. The
restaurant has pictures of customers throughout history, and it’s really cool to see the photos
of the culture in Charlottesville and how it has changed throughout time. The Virginian is
a classic and a great place to go on the Corner.

Being so close to Grounds, the Corner is a popular place for students to hang out. There
are a ton of great places, and you can check out the link below for a full list! Be sure to
visit the Corner when you’re in town, especially all the students in Charlottesville
for the summer.

Signing off,
Abby S.
