Carter Mountain Sunset Series

Happy Thursday, avid readers! In this blog, we’re covering one of the top events in
all of the C’ville Summer, the Sunset Series Concerts at Carter Mountain Orchard.
Carter Mountain is a beautiful apple orchard only about ten minutes from UVa’s
central Grounds, nestled atop a mountain only minutes from Monticello. In the fall, you
can pick your own apples, and they always have fresh apples available. It is open throughout
most of the school year, closing for the seasons where apples aren’t in season, but the
Summer Series is a special event for Charlottesville residents and UVa students on summer
nights.

The Event
Every Thursday evening at around 6:00, music begins to fill the orchard at Carter Mountain.
Local bands will come to play for families and friends who have gathered in the grass to
listen in to the sounds of C’ville. The food opens up at 5:30, and people start to stake out their
spots. There are a few picnic tables available, but most people choose to bring blankets and sit
on the grass. The bands are great, usually folk and indie music that is really popular here in
C’ville. Essentially, this event is a giant free concert on a mountain overlooking the city, but
there’s really so much more.

The Food
APPLES.
No just kidding, they have tons of options for food on the mountain! For dinner, they have
the Mountain Grill, which serves local food on a rotating special menu. People love their
cider-braised pork barbeque, as well as their local burgers and fries. They also have delicious
apple treats, like apple cider slushies, donuts, and fresh peach and vanilla soft serve. My
favorite is the cider slushie float, which is basically a cider slushie dumped on delicious ice
cream. They also sell the classic pie and cookies, and basically any apple themed treat you
could desire. And of course, they offer amazing apples as well.

The Bands
The band that performs switches every week, and a full itinerary can be found at the
website for Carter Mountain (link below!). The site also lists the bands genre, so you can
plan when to go around which music you like the most. The event has a huge variety of bands,
so there is something for everyone at this event.

Sunset Series is one of the most popular and well-loved events in Charlottesville, and
Carter Mountain itself is a must-see before you graduate. If you’re here for the summer
be sure to stop by, or attend one of the late August/September events when you come back
to UVa. As always, make sure to tag @uva_summer in any pics you take! Happy exploring!
Signing off,

Abby S.
