Fridays after Five

Welcome to last blog of summer activities week! For today, I want to talk about
a classic event here in Charlottesville, another free concert with local music. This
event takes place every Friday in Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, and runs from
April through early September, and is a really fantastic event for all of Charlottesville.

The Event
Every Friday at five o’clock, local bands start to play on the stage at the Spring Pavilion,
the concert venue at the very end of the Downtown Mall. Families, friends, and groups of
summer Wahoos gather to listen in to the music and hang out together. The event is free for
all to attend, so come early if you want a good seat! People sit on chairs that are set up, as
well as a few tables and lots of floor space. This is a great place to bring a picnic blanket to!

The Food
Various non-profit groups work together each week to run concessions for the event,
where the money you spend will be donated to important causes around Charlottesville.
Outside of the event’s concessions, the restaurants on the Mall are all open and ready for
the beginning of the weekend rush, so it’s a great time to stop at a place there for dinner.
Need food recs? Check out our blog on food at the Downtown Mall from last week! This
event can be a great way to get out and really explore the Downtown Mall, especially since
the music from the Pavilion can be heard from many outside seating areas at restaurants
around. You can also feel free to pack your own picnic food or snacks to bring to the event.

The Bands
A different local band performs each week, and the full list and schedule can be found
using the link below! There are many different genres of music playing, and a lot of people
will go to many concerts to compare the music in each one. I have heard (though I have
been unable to confirm using the Internet) that Dave Matthews Band once played Fridays
after Five when they were starting up, so this could be a great way to find the next big
band!

This is one of the most popular summer events here in Charlottesville, and is a great event
for all ages. If you’re in town for the summer or just for the weekend, make sure you stop
by! Thanks for reading this week of blogs on Summer in C’ville, and stay tuned for more
blogs throughout the rest of the summer!
Signing off,

Abby S.
