Charlottesville Restaurant Scene: Downtown Mall

Charlottesville is a city of restaurants and culture, and the epicenter of that is
the Downtown Mall. Full of life and fun, this is the virtual center of the city’s
culture, and is an amazing place for anything you want to do. There are
options for all types of eating in the Downtown Mall!

Americana
There are many new American food restaurants Downtown. One of the oldest
on the Mall is Miller’s, located near the center. With classic food and live music
every night, this is a really cool place to stop by. During the Concert for
Charlottesville a few years ago, Miller’s even hosted members of Dave
Matthews Band!

Citizen Burger is my favorite restaurant. They make burgers with local ingredients,
and allow you to build your own meal. Charlottesville is surrounded by so many
amazing local farms, and it is great to have restaurants that utilize them. The food is
fantastic, and they have great indoor seating with original Downtown Mall brick, as
well as an outdoor patio right by the Paramount Theater. They even have vegetarian
options, like veggie burgers and fresh salads, making it a great place for all food
lovers.

The Nook is a classic diner right Downtown. The menu is huge, ranging from
breakfast foods to pastas, including a specialty macaroni and cheese. This is a popular
spot for both breakfasts and late nights. The large menu makes it a great place to go
with a group, because there’s always something for everyone.

Cafes and Sweets
The Pie Chest is a small pie bakery on the Downtown Mall. They serve fantastic
coffee, as well as a selection of both savory and sweet pies. You can get slices, mini-
pies, or full size pies for families and groups. The Heirloom Tomato and Mozzarella
pie is delicious, and the Peanut Butter Pie is classic. This is a really unique place to get lunch, coffee, or just a good slice of pie.

One of the best bakeries in C’ville is MarieBette, which has a location on the
Downtown Mall called Petite MarieBette! They serve breakfasts, sandwiches, and
coffees, as well as baked goods from the original location. If you’re a fan of classic
French croissants or baguettes, this is the place for you. Their selection is pleasantly
large for such a small location, and their pastries are always delicious.

Something New
Charlottesville has restaurants of all types of cuisine, and the Downtown Mall has
a great variety of selection As someone from a small town, these different cuisines
were only available to me if I tried to make them, and also as someone with no
culinary skill, I love trying new types of food around Charlottesville.

The Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar is a really unique place. The Mediterranean-inspired
vegetarian food is really good, especially the homemade hummus platter. My favorite
part about the Tea Bazaar is right in the name: the teas! There’s something different
about getting a pot of tea with friends that can make a coffee trip much more personal,
and can just be a cool way to try new things. They have house tea blends, which are
delicious and nothing like the teas you can get at the store. It’s a really cool place to
go and try something new!

TEN Modern Japanese Cuisine is a cool new-age eatery Downtown. In the top floor
of a building, the atmosphere is interesting and cool. They have a large selection of
freshly prepared sushi, and other Japanese delicacies. I love their dessert Coffee and
Donuts, which are ginger and orange beignets with a Vietnamese coffee milkshake. TEN
is a really great place to stop to try new things, and with their wide selection there is
something for everyone!

Charlottesville has the 14th most restaurants per capita of any city across the United
States (Huffington Post, 2017). The Downtown Mall is truly the center of restaurant
culture, with classic diners, upscale eateries, gelato creameries, and everything in between.
This is a must stop during any trip to Charlottesville, any time of year. We hope to see you
there this summer! And make sure to check the blog tomorrow to learn about an awesome
event for Charlottesville restaurants!

Signing off,
Abby S.
